Asya Reznikov was born in Leningrad but moved at the age of five to Boston with her family as political refugees. Since she was the first in her family to learn English, she became both the translator and link with the new culture. In her artistic practice, Reznikov has been developing a poetics around the concepts of identity, immigration/emigration and travelling and her work explore how culture, tradition, language and sense of home shape and define our identity. Reznikov’s art is an intersection of video, performance, and installation. Reznikov shoots the video on location or on set, and subsequently composites the video footage and integrates it into other objects to create video sculptures and installations. Reznikov’s performances become loop videos that are built into the object that she constructs, interact with and reference the objects themselves.
Reznikov received her M.F.A. from Hunter College, N.Y.C., her B.F.A. from the Massachusetts College of Art, Boston, and also studied in Berlin, Germany; Wolverhampton, England; and New York. She has lived and worked in France, England, Holland, Italy, Germany, and India. In 2006, Reznikov was awarded a two-year DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service), Fellowship, to live and make art in Berlin, Germany. In 2008 she was the recipient of a 2008 Culturas Prize sponsored by the Cultural Ministry of Spain. Reznikov’s recent solo exhibitions include “Up-Routed”, Nancy Hoffman Gallery, NY (2010), “Moving Home”, Galerie der BASF, Schwarzheide, Germany (2009), “Baggage Claim”, Nancy Hoffman Gallery, NY (2007), and “Ubersetzung”, Galerie-Open, Berlin, Germany (2006). She has a solo exhibition opening in August 2010 at the Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown Ohio.
