Q. What is the concept of Young Masters?
A. Young Masters encourages contemporary artists to look back to the art of the past and art history to inspire their work, whether through technique, concept, theme or medium.
We’re looking for artists who show originality, skill and imagination in response to the art of the past. You can interpret this as widely as you like. You have the chance to explain your interpretation in your artist statement.
Q. How old do I have to be to enter?
A. The prize is open to artists over the age of 18. There is no upper age limit.
Q. Do I have to be from the UK?
A. Artists from anywhere in the world can apply.
Q. Do I have to be a professional artist or have attended art school?
A. We accept and encourage applications from artists from any background.
Q. I have gallery representation, can I apply?
A. Yes, Young Masters has a long tradition of collaboration with galleries and agents. Please note, all works shortlisted should be available for sale by Young Masters.
Q. I work in ceramics, can I enter?
A. You can enter using the same process and you can choose to enter the Young Masters Maylis Grand Ceramics Prize.
Q. How do I enter?
A. Entries are made by online via the website
Q. What does my application need to include?
A. We ask for a short artist statement, CV in pdf format, and up to recent 4 artworks (created no earlier than June 2017). Please upload images that show the entirety of the work/s you are submitting. Please note that the first round of judging is completed digitally. It is therefore important that the photographs are of a high quality and as clear as possible.
Q. What is the deadline for applications?
A. The deadline is 30th June 2019, midnight BST.
Q. How much does it cost to enter?
A. The fee of £35.00 + VAT (if applicable) paid via Paypal allows you to submit up to four images. The administration fee is used for the sole purpose of running the Prize.
Q. What are the prizes?
A. The prizes are as follows:
Young Masters Art Prize:
• A Winner’s Prize of £1,500
• Two Highly Commended Awards of £500, courtesy the Artists’ Collecting Society (ACS)
Young Masters Maylis Grand Ceramics prize:
• A Winner’s Prize of £1,000, generously sponsored by James and Maylis Grand
• A Highly Commended Award of £500, generously sponsored by James and Maylis Grand
Emerging Woman Artist Award:
• £1,000, generously sponsored by Dr Chris Blatchley, along with mentoring, career advice and inclusion in an upcoming Art Fair with Cynthia Corbett Gallery
People’s Choice Award:
• £500, Sponsored by Brownhill Insurance
Q. What are the dates of the Young Masters Art Prize 2019 exhibition?
Exhibition of shortlisted artists in London will take place from 30 September to 5 October at La Galleria, Pall Mall.
